Well here we are in the final week of the course and at the end of the Genius Hour Project. During the last six weeks I explored Neural Networks from a Python programming perspective and theiir various applications across multiple industries. I will discuss the the various aspects of the project in the final week in the sections below.
What I Learned:
During this Genius Hour Project I learned a great deal more than I knew about neural networks, specifically neural networks in Python as well as how these neural networks can be applied to various industries from a real world perspective. I explored the structure of Neural networks the process of building them and how they work, I learned what supervised vs. unsupervised training was and about Neural network algorithms. When researching neural networks in Python I learned about Python datasets, advantages and Neural network modules in Python. From an application perspective I learned about Image recognition, healthcare applications and GIS Applications. For a full discussion of what I learned please see my final product at the link above or here.
What I Enjoyed:
I found the Genius Hour project to be very interesting and quite enjoyable, it was so great to have an incentive to research something that I have been interested in learning about for so long but never had the chance academically to dive into it. It was so interesting seeing how it is being applied in the real world and how it is even being used to attempt to replicate human minds and reading about theoretical uses in Artificial Intelligence.
What my Challenges Were:
There were a couple of challenges that I ran into while working on my Genius Hour project, I had never really done any video editing or voice recordings so I had to figure out how to make a movie trailer and how to properly record a podcast like the TED talk required me to do. From a learning perspective I did struggle with understanding some of the complex mathematics and coding that I was reading about while researching programming artificial neural networks. Some of the more complex algorithms and coding examples still elude me and further research and learning will be required to fully grasp neural networks beyond basic networks.
What I Would Change:
I think I am pretty happy with how my Genius Hour project turned out, I got to research and learn about something that interests me and I feel like my knowledge at the end was far greater than at the start. I think most of what I would change would have required more time but I wish I could have dived into the actual Python code a little more and try writing my own code which brings me to where I can go from here.
Where I go from here:
I will definitely continue this interest past the project, I hope to continue to read about and further my knowledge in neural networks in Python, I am hoping to install modules for advanced mathematics in Python, download an example training dataset and to use and modify existing code before at some point in the future writing my own simple neural network in Python from scratch. From a teaching perspective I think I will try using this project in class to increase student interest and engagement and to allow for students to learn about things that interest them. Overall I think this project has had a positive impact on me both personally and professionally.
